Five Year Anniversary of COVID-19 Pandemic

Z. Garnett

It has been five years since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID 19 outbreak to be a global pandemic. Life as we knew it was forever changed; stay at home orders and shutdowns were enforced, isolating us from loved ones; face masks became our apart of our daily attire; and household items like hand sanitizer and toilet paper became highly sought after.

While we are far from those earlier, grim days of the pandemic, many are still faced with lingering effects, like the memory losing a loved one. According to data from the Center’s for Disease Control, as of March 2025, nearly 1.2 million Americans lost their lives due to COVID. America has the highest number of COVID deaths of any country in the world and experts suspect that it may be higher.

Furthermore, many people who have caught the virus, suffer from what it known as ‘Long COVID.’ The cause of long COVID is unknown, however, risk factors include underlying health issues. Symptoms can last for weeks, months, or even years and can include but are not limited to the following: fever, fatigue, coughing, chest pain, headaches, trouble concentrating, difficulties sleeping, stomach, joint or muscle pain.

As we reflect back, we cannot forget the sacrifice of all the nurses, doctors, and many healthcare professionals who cared for the sick during such scary and uncertain times.
